Continuing Medical Education (CME) is an essential aspect of maintaining licensure and staying updated with the latest advancements in healthcare. For MD and DO physicians practicing in Oregon, it's crucial to understand and adhere to the state's specific CME requirements. These requirements are designed to ensure that physicians maintain a high standard of care and stay current with medical knowledge.

Oregon CME Requirements for MD and DO Physicians:

  • Total CME Credits: Physicians must complete 60 hours of CME every 2 years, or 30 hours if licensed during the second year of the biennium.
  • Type of Credits: All CME credits must be AMA Category 1, AOA Category 1A, or AOA Category 2A credits.
  • Pain Management Course: All licensees of the Oregon Medical Board (except those holding Lapsed, Limited, Telemedicine, Teleradiology, or Telemonitoring licenses) must complete a 1-hour pain management course.
  • Additional Pain Management Requirement: Physicians must also complete a minimum of 6 CME credit hours in the subject of pain management and/or the treatment of terminally ill and dying patients. This requirement can be fulfilled with any combination of CME coursework focusing on pain management and/or treatment of terminally ill and dying patients.
  • Mandatory Topics: Participation in cultural competency, suicide risk assessment, and Alzheimer's education may be counted toward the mandatory continuing education required of all Board licensees.

Fulfilling these requirements ensures that Oregon MD and DO physicians remain current in their medical practice and provide the best possible care to their patients.
