Navigating the landscape of Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements can be a complex endeavor for healthcare professionals. In Louisiana, both MD and DO physicians are subject to specific mandates set forth by the state's medical board. These requirements are not only centered around the quantity of CME credits but also emphasize the quality and relevance of the educational content.

Below, we detail the CME requirements for Louisiana MD and DO physicians, ensuring you stay compliant and informed:

  • Annual CME Credits: Physicians are required to complete a minimum of 20 hours of Category 1 CME each year.
  • Licensing Period: The CME credits must be accumulated over a three-year licensing period.
  • Specialized Coursework - Completed in 1 Course:some text
    • Drug Diversion Training: A one-time, 3-hour CME course on drug diversion training is mandatory for all licensees holding a Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) license. This course must be pre-approved by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners.
    • Prescribing Practices for Controlled Substances: As part of the drug diversion training, physicians must also complete a segment focusing on the best prescribing practices for controlled substances.
    • Addiction Treatment: The training includes a component on appropriate treatment methodologies for addiction.
  • Board Orientation Course: A one-time board orientation course is required for new licensees. This course covers topics such as the Louisiana Medical Practice Act, the function of the Board, rules and regulations, and opportunities available in rural and professional health shortage areas.
