Staying compliant with continuing medical education (CME) requirements is a critical aspect of maintaining licensure for healthcare professionals in Illinois. The state sets forth a comprehensive set of CME criteria, which can be challenging to keep track of due to the sheer volume of credits required and the specificity of subject areas mandated. CME Trail is here to streamline this process by bringing all the essential CME information into one easy-to-access resource. For further details on state CME requirements, please visit the official Federation of State Medical Board documentation.

Illinois CME Requirements Overview:

For MD and DO physicians in Illinois, here's a breakdown of what you need to know:

  • Total CME Credits Required: 150 hours every three years
  • Category 1 Credits: At least 60 hours must be AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™
  • Opioid Prescribing Education: Starting in 2020, you must complete 3 hours of CME on safe opioid prescribing practices. This training can be offered or accredited by a professional association, state government agency, or federal agency.
